A home reno mindset A-ha!

For those of you who follow me on Instagram, you know that I attempted a pretty big, and scary, home renovation project.

Well…it’s not exactly going GREAT. I am learning a lot about sanding and staining…more than I probably want to know.

But what is most important is what I am learning about myself and mindset!

I often say, “How you do one thing, is how you do EVERYTHING.”

I have a new theory, “How you THINK about one thing, is how you THINK about everything.”

How you think, creates how you feel, and how you act.

I stumbled upon this realization as I was watching the stain dry… oh…so unevenly and splotchily on my staircase.

I felt myself get frustrated and filled with shame.

All of my old BS (belief structures), perfectionism, self-loathing, and self-deprecation came flooding back:

“I can’t have nice things.”

“I always do things halfway, of course it looks like shit.”

“I’m a failure.”

“Life is hard for me.”

“Why do I even bother?”

Basically, I suck (and should never be allowed near another home improvement project again).

The most interesting thing is that these are all thoughts I have had throughout my life…as a young child in school, in my business, at work, and in relationships.

None of these thoughts are NEW.

Just old BS coming back up.

So…how you think about one thing is how you think about everything.

These thoughts coming back are OK, they are just old survival mechanisms.

You can greet them like an old friend, “Ah, here you are, it’s ok you are here and it’s ok that I feel this way.”

But you don’t have to go down the rabbit hole of feeling like a terrible person.

You get to decide how to think and feel when you fail or fall or make a mistake.

You can watch the thoughts and be with them with kindness and curiosity ... .and then decide how to move forward (your brain does a much better job problem solving when it is not in fight, flight, or freeze).

I talk all about this in this reel on Instagram, check it out...and get a glimpse of my "rustic railing here.

I'd love to hear about, and even see, your home reno faux pas! Send me a note at nichole@nicholejones.com to tell me all about it!

Until next time!

Namaste~
